OCCURRENCE: General Don requested Conein by that time of his Headquarters, Don stated the general officers were meeting and decided to attempt to take advantage of the 26 October National Day to cover their coup d'état. In a word, a member of General Don's staff, Colonel Nguyen Huu Co, had talked to Don and indicated that a coup was to occur on or about 26 October. Conein's orders to the Americans had remained the same and as a result President Diem's orders to the staff for dispositions, which would keep officers in the Saigon area for the coup, to go on expanded operations outside Saigon.
