OCCURRENCE:
When this did not materialize by early October, the coup participants realized that they had little military strength against the regime. It is evident from statements during this series of meetings with General Don and General Minh during the month of October that they still did not have high hopes of being able to overthrow him peacefully. Minh had argued that, if necessary, to eliminate Diem it is essential to stage an assassination. This was supported by Don, who reminded Minh of Diem's daily religious practices at the palace, near the Cross (between the palace and the wall to the tennis court).
