A Mission to Cuba: Tale of the Doomed Raiders

On March 17, 1960, President Eisenhower authorized the CIA to form a paramilitary unit of Cuban exiles to invade Cuba. Shortly thereafter, the CIA dispatched General Frank Bissell to Guatemala for a conference with President Miguel Ydigoras about setting up training bases in that country.
The "secret" mission was quickly discovered and reported by the Guatemalan press.
"Plans had gone to break into the Cuban Havana radio network and broadcast a fake message from Fidel Castro," said one source. "The message was to announce that Fidel was resigning and that the Cuban people should rise up against the Communists."
The plan was abandoned when the CIA failed to find a Cuban exile who could imitate Castro's voice.
The CIA also planned to have a Cuban exile pilot fly a plane to Havana and drop leaflets urging the people to revolt. But the pilot got drunk and crashed the plane.
The CIA then decided to send a team of Cuban exiles to infiltrate Cuba and organize a resistance movement. The team was captured and executed.
