I left the Foreign Service in Dec. 1951 with the intention of entering private business in California. In company with a younger brother and other close relatives, a decision had been reached to buy a large ranch, to be based near Fresno, California. A few months trial convinced me that I did not belong away from government service, in which I have spent a quarter of a life, and I therefore decided to return to government service as soon as it is possible for me to do so.
