DATES:

CATEGORIES: DIH

TOP SECRET

OCCURRENCE:
In response to a question as to whether McCone was aware of a suggestion to assassinate Mr. Diem and we had sent a telegram in conjunction to that suggestion, McCone testified that he did not think it was Mr. Diem. He testified that "There was a proposal, one of a number of proposals, in connection with the difficult political situation that existed in South Vietnam, to dispose by assassination of Mr. Nhu and General Kahn... when that was brought to my attention I ordered a telegram sent out to stand that down" (4) McCone testified that "The situation in Vietnam was unlike other situations. We were really at war there. My opposition was more on the basis of considered judgement that the action recommended by the station wouldn't in final analysis solve any problem." (5).
