SUNDAY NEWS, JUNE 13, 1976 CIA Sent Bedmate To Kill Castro in '60 By PAUL MESKIL (STAFF CORRESPONDENT) The Central Intelligence Agency sent a shapely Mata Hari to Cuba in 1960 to kill her former lover, Fidel Castro. Details of this case were uncovered by The News and a Senate Intelligence Committee investigator who learned that a mystery woman had been involved in an assassination plot against the Cuban dictator. It was the first of several CIA-sponsored attempts to eradicate Castro. The mystery woman has now been identified by the committee and The News as Marita Lorenz, a striking blonde whose dramatic life story has been written for a movie and television script. Miss Lorenz has admitted her role in the bizarre plot, her intimate relationship with Castro and her involvement in a plot to kill him. Exclusive Account The News will break this exclusive story in a series of reports and reveal details about the plot and the woman who was recruited to carry it out. Miss Lorenz, then 19, flew to Havana in 1959 and lived in the Havana Hilton with Castro. She was his personal interpreter and confidante. She returned to the United States after a falling out with Castro and was recruited by the CIA to return to Havana and kill him. Quizzed by FBI Frank Sturgis, an American who fought with Cuban forces against Batista, confirmed her story. Sturgis, now under indictment in connection with the Watergate break-in, was questioned by the FBI about the plot. Miss Lorenz, who later became involved with anti-Castro Cuban exiles, was questioned by the FBI about the plot. The Memo That Started It On Dec. 11, 1960, Col. J. C. King, head of the CIA's Western Hemisphere Division, wrote a memo to then CIA Director Allen Dulles. According to a Senate committee report, King in the memo referred to this case in part: "Neither the (CIA) nor (other) persons in the U.S. Government should appear to have participated in encouraging or in any way giving approval to the assassination of (Castro)." The memo added: "The elimination of Fidel Castro is the final solution to the Cuban problem and it should be the result of Cuban dissident action. It should be made clear that the U.S. Government will not commit itself to any kind of action which would openly associate the U.S. with the overthrow of the Castro regime." The memo was written after Fidel Castro had already survived at least five assassination attempts against him in the first two years. This is the exclusive story of the first try.
