Aria Floors Opera Singer

Miami, Jan. 12 (UPI) — An opera singer who went for a spin down the Royal Opera House staircase in London last night is recovering from a fractured leg and three broken ribs.

Her escort, the former Russian ballet star Rudolph Nureyev, said she slipped and fell while descending the stairs at the Sir Gilbert Scott-designed theater.

"It was a very unfortunate accident," Nureyev said. "She was in high spirits and laughing when it happened."

The singer, whose name was not disclosed, was taken to a nearby hospital where she underwent surgery to set her fractured leg. Doctors said she would remain hospitalized for at least two weeks.

Nureyev, who was not injured, said he would remain in London to be near his friend. He declined to comment further.
