Report of ARTIME, C-27, to Mr. W. (CIA Contact)
ARTIME said that this is not a battle of Americans alone for the Cuban cause, but that there is to be a battle among Cubans themselves for the liberation of Cuba.
ARTIME said persons accuse him of being a dictator, accuse of being a militarist, and accuse of being an opportunist. He prefers to be accused in favor of collective interests things have to be corrected. To those who accuse him of being an opportunist, he says that if using any opportunity in benefit of the freedom of Cuba is being an opportunist, then he is the first opportunist.
ARTIME said that previous Cuban rulers had had their mistakes. That when the Constitution of 1940 had been written it had also had its mistakes, but as it functioned really we don’t know what those mistakes are. For the present, until the Cuban people give themselves another Constitution our sole guide for our survival as Free Cubans should be to adhere to the Constitution of 1940.
He spoke of the Cuban case in the international field, in the sense that he does not understand the attitude of certain men or of the rest of the Latin American countries which are allowing their fields to be taken by Castro-Communist guerrillas. ARTIME mentioned that he has put the highest hope the O.A.S. will do something in benefit of the Cuban cause.
ARTIME said the audience was asked if she was a teacher from Remedios, Las Villas province, asked him why help was not given to her young students who were fighting in Las Villas province without shoes, food or ammunition. She also mentioned that two days ago five of her young boys were executed, including a niece.
When ARTIME went down among the audience to accompany this lady to the microphone, she whispered a name to ARTIME but the audience could not catch the name. ARTIME replied: "You have mentioned a name that is not new in this room because he is helping in the liberation of Cuba. He is one of my greatest helpers." However, ARTIME did not mention the name either.
